MP Nikos Sykas Removed from DISY's Electoral Ballot

The Political Bureau of the Democratic Rally (DISY) has decided, by a large majority (75 in favor, 9 against), to remove MP for Limassol, Nikos Sykas, from the party's electoral ballot for the 2026 parliamentary elections. The decision followed a lengthy meeting and intense discussion, with the majority supporting Sykas's removal. A proposal for a unanimous decision by the party President, Annita Dimitriou, was not accepted. Nikos Sykas was not present at the meeting but had expressed his view that he should be included in the ballot, as the case against him has been closed. DISY's decision was based on a complaint regarding an incident of domestic violence, initially filed by his partner and later withdrawn due to stress and pressure, as reported in court. Despite the withdrawal of the complaint, the Legal Service deemed that there was a public interest and requested the lifting of Sykas's parliamentary immunity to allow a full investigation of the allegations. The Supreme Court granted the request, lifting his immunity. Regarding the vacancy on the ballot, reports suggest that Andreas Michaelides is being considered for inclusion, having been excluded in the previous internal process. Sykas's future within the DISY Parliamentary Group remains uncertain.
