Biodiversity Loss May Be Driving Mosquitoes to Target Humans

A new study suggests that biodiversity loss may be leading to an increase in mosquito attacks on humans. The research, conducted in the Atlantic Forest, showed that mosquitoes previously feeding on a wide variety of animals are now turning more towards humans due to the reduction in available hosts. The study analyzed DNA from mosquito blood meals and found that a significant proportion had fed on human blood. This increases the risk of transmitting diseases such as dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya virus. Researchers emphasize that the availability and proximity of hosts are important factors influencing mosquito feeding behavior.
