Pensioners' Union Calls for Permanent Solution for Small Allowance

The Union of Cypriot Pensioners (UCY) is calling for a permanent and institutional solution for the small allowance, to ensure the protection of low-income pensioners. It welcomes the recent decision of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare to prevent the recurrence of a problem that has arisen in recent years, regarding the calculation of increases in Social Insurance Fund (SIF) pensions on the income of low-income pensioners, which led to a reduction or even cancellation of the allowance. The UCY proposes the automatic annual revision of the poverty line, taking into account the increases in SIF pensions (including the ATA) and the general increase in the income of contributors. The goal is for pensioners to maintain a decent standard of living. The Union criticizes piecemeal interventions and emphasizes that the problem requires a permanent solution. It also calls for an immediate revision of the poverty line, which has remained unchanged since 2013, taking into account the economic crisis, the pandemic, and inflation. The UCY rejects the Council of Ministers' claim of a cost of €13.5 million, describing it as misleading. It argues that there is no additional cost, but simply that the state will not benefit from that amount. It believes it is unfair for low-income pensioners to lose income due to technical adjustments.
