Phytiris: Security and Operational Readiness Key for Successful Cypriot Presidency

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Konstantinos Phytiris, presented the General Operational Policing Plan for the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU (January – June 2026). The Minister emphasized that the security and operational readiness of the relevant services are crucial for the success of the Presidency, which represents a significant opportunity for Cyprus to be at the center of Europe. The plan, developed by the Cyprus Police in collaboration with the Presidency Secretariat and other state bodies, aims to ensure the safety of all foreign dignitaries, delegations, and conference participants during the Presidency. It includes information gathering and evaluation, risk assessment, and security measures, with particular emphasis on airport security, traffic arrangements, and the safety of accommodation and conference venues. Minister Phytiris congratulated the Cyprus Police for the detailed and well-documented nature of the plan and assured that the Ministry would provide all necessary support for its successful implementation. He expressed confidence that Cyprus can meet the requirements of the Presidency. The successful exercise of the Presidency is considered a national responsibility, as Cyprus will have increased European presence and must guarantee the safety, institutional seriousness, and international credibility of the country.
