Polar Chill Grips Britain: Temperatures Plummet to -8°C in London - Lake Near Buckingham Palace Freezes Over

Britain is facing one of the most severe cold snaps of the winter, with frost, snowfall, and extremely low temperatures causing significant disruption. The temperature dropped to -12.5°C in Marham, East Anglia, while even major cities like London, Birmingham, and Bournemouth saw temperatures reach -8°C, conditions unusual for the United Kingdom. The images from the frozen surface of the St James’s Park lake, with the Buckingham Palace in the background, are striking. The bad weather has resulted in the closure of hundreds of schools for the second consecutive day, with at least 775 school units across the country remaining closed. Areas of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England have been particularly affected, with remote learning implemented in some cases to mitigate the impact on the learning process. British media reports also indicate serious problems with transportation. Heavy snowfall and ice have led to cancellations and delays on rail services, with major companies like LNER and Great Northern urging passengers to postpone their journeys. Faults on railway switches and icy rails have caused complete traffic disruption on some lines, while problems with overhead power lines have also affected services to and from Heathrow Airport. The situation is similar in air transport, with flights from Aberdeen and Inverness cancelled, including routes to Amsterdam and Gatwick, causing inconvenience to hundreds of passengers. In Glasgow, the city's subway was temporarily suspended due to a power outage caused by ice. The Met Office has issued orange and yellow warnings for snow and ice across much of the country, with orange warnings indicating a high risk and potential threats to life and property, primarily affecting areas of northern Scotland. The UK Health Security Agency has also issued an orange health warning due to the cold, highlighting the risks to vulnerable groups. Meteorologists warn that the difficult weather conditions may continue in the coming days.
