Police to Have On-the-Spot Authority to Revoke Driver's Licenses

A new procedure allowing police to revoke driver's licenses on the spot for serious traffic violations related to alcohol and drug use is soon to be implemented. The process, promoted after an agreement with the Department of Road Transport and the Legal Service, aims to immediately prevent driving under the influence. Police will be able to remove licenses from drivers deemed "very dangerous," while also impounding their vehicles. The duration of the suspension will be determined by a decree from the Minister of Transport. This move comes after alarming figures showing an increase in driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, with 11 deaths attributed to this phenomenon in 2025. However, there is criticism of the process, as it is considered to violate legal guarantees and could lead to conflicts with citizens.
