Police to Immediately Revoke Driver's Licenses for Serious Offenses

The Cyprus Police are promoting changes to the process of suspending driver's licenses for serious traffic violations, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to Traffic Sub-Inspector Tassos Asiekkis, police officers will be able to immediately revoke licenses from drivers deemed “very dangerous”. This change is being made following an agreement with the Department of Road Transport, aiming to eliminate the time-consuming process of correspondence. The on-the-spot delivery of the suspension letter will speed up the process and ensure that offenders do not continue to drive immediately. Mr. Asiekkis stated that 11 road fatalities were recorded in 2025 that were linked to driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, with 5 due to a combination and another 5 solely to drugs. The problem is particularly acute in certain provinces, such as Paphos. The criminal prosecution for serious offenses remains a separate process, while the immediate suspension of the driver's license will depend on the issuance of a relevant decree by the Minister of Transport. The changes are expected to yield results soon, contributing to the reduction of traffic accidents and the protection of citizens.
