Politico: Political Storm in Cyprus After Corruption Allegations at High Level

Cyprus is facing a serious political upheaval following the release of a video containing allegations of corruption at the highest level. The video, posted on the X platform, allegedly shows senior political and state officials discussing ways to circumvent election spending limits through financial donations, as well as a system that would provide businessmen access to the President and First Lady. According to Politico, the video includes references to assistance to Russians to avoid European Union sanctions. The Cypriot government rejects the allegations, describing the video as “hybrid activity” aimed at undermining the country's image, but does not deny its authenticity, arguing that the statements have been taken out of context and stitched together in a misleading way. The opposition is calling for a thorough investigation into the matter, while President Christodoulides called on anyone with evidence of financial gain during the election period or during his term in office to submit it to the authorities. He also argued that companies should offer social benefits as part of Corporate Social Responsibility. The video was posted by an account named “Emily Thompson,” whose identity remains uncertain. The material features former Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis and the President's Chief of Staff, Charalambos Charalambous, who deny the allegations and have reported the incident to the police.
