Politico: Allies Worry About Cyprus EU Presidency

NATO and EU diplomats are expressing concern about Cyprus taking over the presidency of the EU Council in January 2026, given the long-standing tensions with Turkey and Cyprus's opposition to closer military cooperation between the EU and Turkey. They fear that Cyprus will be influenced by hostility towards Turkey, delaying Europe's defense priorities. Cyprus opposes Turkey's inclusion in the SAFE program and the broader integration of EU-NATO cooperation. President Christodoulides stated that Cyprus seeks to persuade Turkey to accept Cyprus's inclusion in the 'Partnership for Peace,' as a first step towards NATO membership, and then create positive prospects in EU-Turkey relations. Cyprus has previously held the EU presidency (2012) and is committed to promoting defense issues, including national implementation plans for SAFE and negotiations to reduce bureaucracy for defense companies. Commissioner for Defense Andrus Kumpilius expressed hope that the development of defense capabilities would proceed regardless of the presidency.
