Potato Farmers Seek Compensation for 2025 Losses – Water Supply Remains a Concern

Potato farmers in Cyprus are requesting government subsidies to compensate for the damages they suffered in 2025 due to heatwaves, frost, and drought. They are also requesting water for irrigation during the night, when frost conditions prevail, to protect their crops. However, they report being informed by the Ministry of Agriculture that due to water scarcity, they will not be able to receive irrigation. Andreas Karyos, President of the Association of Organized Potato Farmers, expressed concern about the lack of support for the sector, noting that 2025 was a particularly difficult year due to extreme weather events. The price of potatoes remains satisfactory for consumers but not for producers, who are facing significant increased production costs. The potato farmers expect to meet with the Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, to discuss the amount of potential subsidies for 2025, with the aim of covering lost income and increased costs. They emphasize that government support is essential to maintain potato production in Cyprus, ensure exports, and meet the needs of Cypriot consumers. According to statements by the Minister, farmers (greenhouse growers, orchard crops, bananas) will receive water with a 30% reduction compared to last year, while open crops, including potatoes, will not receive any water at all.
