Potato Farmers Seek Subsidies to Cover 2025 Damages

Potato farmers in Cyprus are requesting government subsidies to cover the damages they suffered in 2025 from heatwaves, frost, and drought. They are also requesting the provision of water for irrigation during the night, when frost conditions prevail, in order to protect their crops. The President of the Association of Organized Potato Producers, Andreas Karyos, stated that farmers are facing significant difficulties due to extreme weather events and increased production costs. Although the price of potatoes is satisfactory for consumers, it does not cover the costs for producers. Mr. Karyos mentioned that 2025 was a particularly difficult year for potato cultivation, requiring government support to maintain production and exports. The government had already provided a subsidy for 2024, but farmers are expecting a new grant to cover lost income and increased costs. According to statements by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, farmers will receive water with a 30% reduction compared to last year, but potato cultivation is not included in this category, as it did not receive water last year either.
