President: Quality Education Upgrade is an Investment in National Survival

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized the importance of education for national survival and the liberation of Cyprus, speaking at a memorial service for the first Minister of Education, Konstantinos Spyridakis. He characterized Spyridakis' work as fundamental to Greek education in Cyprus and as a source of inspiration for current educational reforms. Upgrading education, according to the President, is an investment in the identity, language, and culture of the Cypriot people. The President stated that education is the foundation of the past, present, and future of Cypriot Hellenism, and that his government is pursuing the continuous promotion of education, following Spyridakis' vision. Education, according to the President, should cultivate citizens with respect, responsibility, and democratic ethos. Particular emphasis was placed on Konstantinos Spyridakis' contribution to preserving the Greek character of Cypriot education, both during British rule and after independence. His multifaceted scientific, pedagogical, and cultural work was recognized, as well as his close relationship with the Pancyprian Gymnasium, which he served in various positions and transformed into a center of knowledge. President Christodoulides underlined that Spyridakis believed in fostering conscious and proud Cypriot Greeks who would work to preserve national orientations. The President's speech constitutes a clear commitment to strengthening education as a key pillar of Cypriot society and as a tool for achieving national goals.
