President's Responsibility to the EU and Pride "in the Last Occupied Capital"

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU will focus on a Europe that combines autonomy with outward orientation, protecting the interests of its citizens and acting as a force for peace and development. He emphasized the importance of Cyprus as a bridge between the EU and the wider region, highlighting the need for dialogue and cooperation. The President expressed confidence that Cyprus is ready to lead decisively and contribute to European integration, translating the EU's strategic goals into action. The Presidency is undertaken with a sense of responsibility and pride, especially given Cyprus's geographical location and its status as the last occupied capital in Europe. Christodoulides referred to the historical significance of European integration, which was born out of difficult trials, and the need for unity and credibility of the EU.
