Pressure on Legal Service Regarding Syka's Immunity – Lifting it Seen as 'Only Way' to Proceed with Investigation

The Legal Service of Cyprus is under pressure to decide on lifting the parliamentary immunity of Nikos Syka, who faces allegations. The Deputy Attorney General, Savvas Angelides, has instructed for the immediate evaluation of the case file and requested further investigation, to ensure the recommendation for lifting or not lifting immunity is fully justified. Lifting the immunity is considered a necessary condition for the official investigation of Mr. Syka, who nevertheless has the right to object. However, information suggests that those around Mr. Syka do not intend to submit an objection, showing a willingness to cooperate with the authorities. Nevertheless, the delay in the decision of the Legal Service is considered politically exposed, as without the lifting of immunity, the investigation of the case cannot proceed.
