Problem in Greek FIR: Planes in the Air Will Land Manually

Published January 4, 2026, 10:23

A significant problem has arisen in Greek airspace due to disruptions in radio frequencies. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority has issued instructions for flights, resulting in reduced capacity and delays or cancellations of departures, particularly from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. Aircraft already in the air are being forced to land “manually,” meaning without the use of automatic systems, and others are being diverted to other airports. The problem lies in the central radio frequency systems of the Athens and Macedonia Area Control Centers, and the duration of the restoration is unknown. An experienced pilot points out the need to modernize the HCAA systems.
