Proposal: Temporary Operating Permits for Hotels Based on Fire Safety

A special regime for temporary operating permits for hotels and tourist accommodations is being promoted, with the aim of strengthening fire protection. The bill, submitted by DISY MP Kyriakos Chatzigiannis, provides that units that do not fully comply with current legislation will be able to obtain a temporary permit, subject to strict conditions and the implementation of comprehensive fire protection plans. The proposal was discussed in the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, where Mr. Chatzigiannis emphasized that the goal is to address the chronic problematic situation where hundreds of tourist units operate without a license. The Fire Service will determine the specific fire protection requirements for each unit. Mr. Chatzigiannis argued that the proposal does not mean a relaxation of safety rules, but rather their strengthening, and that the practice of successive extensions has not solved the problem. The regulation is considered to contribute to reducing risk in the tourism sector and encouraging investment.
