Provocative Akar: “Selfish approach from Greek Cypriots and Greece”

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar stated that the Turkish army will remain in Cyprus until peace is achieved, accusing the Greek Cypriot side and Greece of a “selfish approach” to the Cyprus issue. The statements were made during an interview on an occupied television channel. Akar claimed that the statements of the Greek Cypriot side and Greece differ from the discussions held in bilateral and informal meetings, characterizing their public statements as “inconsistent with the facts.” He argued that Turkey remains steadfast in its position for a peaceful solution through dialogue and diplomacy. Akar reiterated that Turkey desires peace and tranquility in Cyprus, but its military presence is necessary to achieve this goal. His statements were made after meetings in the occupied territories. These statements come at a time of increased tension in relations between Greece, Cyprus and Turkey, with the Cyprus issue remaining an unresolved problem.
