Race Against Time to Pass Disability Benefits Legislation

The discussion on legislation concerning disability benefits is in a race against time, with the goal of completion before the end of the parliamentary period. The Labor Committee began the article-by-article discussion on amending the legislation, with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Klea Papaellina. MPs report that the reform is expected to lead to the inclusion of more than 10,000 new beneficiaries in disability benefits, people with severe disabilities who have been excluded until now due to the link between benefits and the Minimum Guaranteed Income and income criteria. The goal is to make a substantial revision and seek improvements on a number of issues. The chairman of the Labor Committee, Andreas Kavkalias, stated that the last plenary session is on April 2nd, with a possible extension to April 6th. MP Andreas Apostolou expressed the belief that some of the Committee's proposals will be accepted by the relevant Deputy Ministry, but stressed the need to increase the budget. The legislation is considered an important step towards strengthening benefits for people with disabilities, with the aim of improving Cyprus's position in the European Union in this area. Discussion and pressure on the executive branch will continue to ensure adequate funding in future budgets.
