Rare 'Purple Asteroid Sapphire' Worth Millions Discovered in Sri Lanka

An exceptionally rare and valuable gemstone, a 3,563-carat 'Purple Asteroid Sapphire,' has been discovered in Sri Lanka. The stone, named 'Star of Pure Land,' exhibits a unique star pattern on its surface due to rutile inclusions, and is considered the largest natural asteroid sapphire ever found. Its value is estimated to exceed $300 million. The sapphire was found in a mine near Ratnapura, Sri Lanka, known as the 'city of gems,' in 2023. The owners purchased it along with other stones and discovered its true worth two years later, after it was certified by two laboratories. The sapphire's uniqueness lies in its well-defined six-rayed asterism. The discovery is generating global interest, as asteroid sapphires are highly sought after due to their rarity and beauty. Their value is determined by factors such as clarity, color, and the intensity of the asterism. Compared to other famous gemstones, such as the Oppenheimer Blue ($57.5 million) and the Williamson Pink Star ($57.7 million), the 'Star of Pure Land' stands out due to its size and rarity, making it one of the most valuable stones ever found.
