A 243-kilogram tuna was sold at auction in Tokyo for a record €2.7 million (510 million yen). Kiyomura Corp., owned by Kiyoshi Kimura, acquired the tuna, surpassing the previous record set in 2019. Kimura, known for his successful bids in these auctions, stated that he had hoped to pay less but could not resist the quality of the fish. The tuna was caught off the coast of Oma, a region in northern Japan renowned for the quality of its tuna. The price per kilogram reached 2.1 million yen. Kimura attributed the high price to both luck and the exceptional quality of the fish. Although hundreds of tuna are sold daily at the Toyosu Fish Market, tuna from Oma are distinguished by their high quality and fetch much higher prices, especially at the annual New Year's auction. The auction began early in the morning, with buyers carefully examining the fish for color, texture, and fat content in order to select the best tuna.
