Red Alert in Sicily and Sardinia as Cyclone Harry Hits Southern Italy

Cyclone “Harry” has hit southern Italy and the central Mediterranean, triggering a red alert in Sicily, Sardinia, and Calabria. Authorities have carried out evacuations of coastal areas and closed schools and beaches. Sicily experienced widespread flooding and strong winds, while in Calabria, part of a cemetery collapsed, sweeping coffins away. In Sardinia, the sea invaded coastal settlements, causing flooding and road closures. The Fire Department carried out 65 rescue operations. Images from the phenomenon show rushing waters entering a restaurant. The intensity of “Harry” was particularly high, with wind gusts of up to 130 km/h in some areas. Similar phenomena have been recorded in the past, but the current intensity was higher. Serious problems were also reported in Malta, with flight and sea route cancellations, as well as damage to infrastructure and homes.
