Reference Centers: The Missing Link of the GeSY for Rare and Complex Diseases

The article highlights the need for the establishment of Reference Centers for rare and complex diseases within the framework of the GeSY (Cyprus National Health System). Reference Centers, which have been established throughout Europe, provide specialized, multidisciplinary care for patients with these conditions, concentrating clinical expertise and advanced diagnostic capabilities. The author emphasizes that free choice of doctor does not guarantee specialized care and that the concentration of experience in specialized centers is essential for the effective management of these diseases. Reference Centers are integrated into European Reference Networks (ERNs), which promote collaboration, harmonization of care standards, and access to innovation. As an example, the ERN-EuroBloodNet for thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies is mentioned, which contributes to faster diagnosis, safer treatment decisions, and access to clinical trials and new therapies. The author stresses that the creation of Reference Centers in Cyprus would significantly improve the quality of care for patients with rare and complex diseases. The article concludes by pointing out that Reference Centers are the “missing link” of the GeSY for providing comprehensive and specialized care to patients with these conditions, ensuring equal access to quality healthcare services.
