Renowned Cypriot Set Designer Kostas Kavkaridis Passes Away

Kostas Kavkaridis, one of the most prominent set designers, painters, and costume designers in contemporary Cypriot theatre, passed away on Tuesday, January 20th, at the age of 80. Born in Pallouriotissa in 1945, he grew up in a theatrical environment, with brothers Stelios Kavkaridis, an actor and director, and Vladimiros Kavkaridis, a theatre artist. He studied set design at the Sofia Academy of Fine Arts in Bulgaria and returned to Cyprus in 1972, where he worked as an art teacher and at the National Theatre of Cyprus (THOK), creating sets and costumes for 30 productions. A pivotal moment in his career was the founding of the New Theatre with Vladimiros Kavkaridis in 1983, which was later renamed the Satirical Theatre in 1987. For 35 years, Kavkaridis designed sets and costumes for the Satirical Theatre, significantly contributing to its establishment as one of Cyprus's most important theatrical venues. His work was characterized by clarity, precision, and a deep understanding of the theatrical process. Beyond his theatrical work, Kavkaridis was also a cultural institution builder, spearheading the creation of the first Professional Drama School in Cyprus in 1993. He retired early from education in 2000 to dedicate himself to the construction of a Cultural Center. The loss of Kostas Kavkaridis is a great sorrow for Cypriot theatre and culture in general, as he leaves behind a rich and significant legacy. His contribution to the development and evolution of theatre in Cyprus is invaluable, and he will forever be remembered as one of the most talented and dedicated creators of the island.
