Report of Dead Zone Violation Near Avlona

The Community Leader of Avlona, Menelaos Savva, reported a new violation of the dead zone near the village by Turkish farmers. According to his complaint, the Turkish farmers are now cultivating citrus fruits, a permanent crop, instead of seasonal vegetables, which is considered more concerning. Mr. Savva informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN about the incident, emphasizing that the Turks do not have permission to cultivate in the dead zone, as the land belongs to Greek Cypriots. Despite repeated complaints, there has been no substantial response from the UN. Following the report, UNIFICYP personnel conducted checks in the area, mainly on Greek Cypriots, while Mr. Savva was also checked and escorted out of the dead zone. The situation remains worrying and further reaction is expected.
