Schengen: Magnus Brunner Optimistic and Supports Cyprus's Accession

Cyprus's application to join the Schengen area was at the center of the press conference following the Informal Council of Justice and Home Affairs Ministers of the EU in Nicosia. European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, expressed optimism that solutions can be found for the island's specificities, including the Green Line. Mr. Brunner acknowledged that the Green Line poses a challenge, but stated his confidence in finding a solution, while ensuring a high level of security for the Schengen area. He emphasized the European Commission's support for Cyprus's accession, which will benefit the entire Schengen zone. The Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Nikolaos Ioannidis, clarified that the Green Line is not a border and will never be, but the Republic has the right to carry out checks along the line based on a specific legal framework. Furthermore, Mr. Brunner referred to significant developments in the return of migrants to Syria, noting that over three million Syrians have already returned and that Frontex has supported nearly 6,000 voluntary returns. The EU has spent approximately 620 million euros on Syria for the years 2026 and 2027, supporting the improvement of living conditions for sustainable returns.
