Sharp Increase in Suicides and PTSD Among Israeli Soldiers

Israel is facing a dramatic increase in suicides and cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among soldiers returning from the Gaza Strip, more than two years after the start of the Israeli invasion. According to reports from the Ministry of Defense and healthcare providers, PTSD cases have increased by 40% since September 2023 and are expected to increase by 180% by 2028. 60% of the 22,300 soldiers who received care for trauma in the war suffer from PTSD. There is also an increase in demand for psychological support from soldiers, with 39% seeking it and 26% expressing concern about depression. Soldiers are facing two main sources of trauma: the fear of death and moral injury, caused by exposure to traumatic events and a sense of responsibility for the deaths of innocents. The war in Gaza has caused immense destruction and human loss, with more than 71,000 Palestinians killed and 2 million living without shelter, water, or access to healthcare. At the same time, Israel reports that more than 1,100 soldiers have been killed since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
