Published January 22, 2026, 20:21

A European report highlights Cyprus as one of the areas at highest risk for wildfires, due to the rapid increase in the frequency, intensity, and extent of fires across Europe. The report, presented by the Cypriot Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, calls on Cyprus to implement a comprehensive prevention and adaptation strategy, integrating the risk of fires into all its policies. It emphasizes the need for Cyprus to play a strategic role in the Eastern Mediterranean region for fire suppression and, more importantly, prevention, as well as regional coordination. The Cyprus Institute is utilizing satellite data and climate change scenarios to improve risk assessment, while emphasis is placed on leveraging artificial intelligence for faster detection and response to wildfires.
