Sri Lanka School Textbook Links to Gay Dating Site

A serious incident occurred in Sri Lanka, where a hyperlink in a school English learning program directed 11 and 12-year-old students to a gay dating website. The Ministry of Education has filed a complaint and is conducting an internal investigation to determine how this error occurred, suspecting sabotage aimed at undermining educational reforms. The program, which encouraged students to find a pen pal to improve their English, used the website buddy.net, which is actually a dating platform for men. Given that same-sex relationships are illegal in Sri Lanka and punishable by imprisonment, the incident has caused significant concern. Authorities have requested the immediate blocking of access to the website in question through telecommunications providers. Despite the program having been reviewed by three different teams, including educators, the error was not detected. The page with the incorrect link was removed from the 400,000 copies intended for schools. Furthermore, it was revealed that the program contained spelling mistakes and had been created with the assistance of artificial intelligence tools. The director of the National Institute of Education, which was responsible for the program, resigned pending the outcome of the investigation. Efforts to decriminalize homosexuality in Sri Lanka continue to face opposition from conservative groups.
