Stefanos to President: You Become Complicit in Potential Crimes

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, addressed an open letter to the President of the Republic regarding the video leak, expressing strong concerns. Stefanou accused the President of either failing to grasp the seriousness of the issue, which would be problematic for the institution, or of tolerating unacceptable practices. He argued that the President's stance negates his previous commitments to fighting corruption and warned that any attempt at a cover-up would fail. Stefanou dismissed the claim that the video is the result of foreign interference, recalling that a similar excuse was used in the “golden passports” scandal. He emphasized that covering up corruption exposes Cyprus to dangers and that the President has a responsibility to protect the country. Furthermore, he accused the President of involving himself in opaque processes through close associates and of becoming complicit in potential crimes. He called for the immediate dismissal of the President's Chief of Staff and the public disclosure of donors to the fund chaired by the President's wife.
