Strong Winds and New Weather System Approaching Cyprus

Published January 21, 2026, 12:37

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for very strong and temporarily gale-force winds, valid from 9:00 PM tonight, mainly in coastal areas. The winds will blow from the northeast to southeast, with a force of 6 Beaufort and temporarily up to 7 Beaufort. The sea will be rough to wavy. Further strengthening of the winds is expected tomorrow, with a strong northeast wind field, temporarily very strong and gale-force (6-7 Beaufort). At the same time, there will be rain and thunderstorms, and dust in the atmosphere. Snow or sleet may fall on the higher peaks of Troodos. A new weather disturbance is expected to affect Cyprus from Friday evening, with rain and thunderstorms. The temperature will range around 7 degrees Celsius inland, 13 degrees Celsius on the coast, and 2 degrees Celsius in the mountains, where frost is expected. The warning was issued as farmers demonstrate against the EU-Mercosur trade agreement outside the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, and the weather conditions are expected to deteriorate across Europe.
