Syria: Army Begins Bombing Kurdish Neighborhoods of Aleppo

Published January 7, 2026, 13:33

The Syrian army has begun bombing neighborhoods of Aleppo with a Kurdish majority, after the deadline given to civilians to leave the area expired. Prior to the deadline, the army had declared the areas under Kurdish control as “closed military zones” and had created two “safe humanitarian passages” for the evacuation of civilians. Thousands of civilians had already fled the areas before the start of the bombing. This move by the Syrian army marks an escalation of the conflict in the region and raises concerns for the safety of civilians who may remain in the Kurdish-controlled areas.
