Taxi Drivers in Larnaca Protest Ride-Hailing Apps with Work Stoppage

Taxi drivers in Larnaca are taking industrial action, starting with a four-hour work stoppage today, Tuesday, due to the unregulated operation of ride-hailing apps, particularly at the airport. They are protesting the lack of substantial action from the relevant authorities despite repeated meetings. The POAT announced that if there are no immediate and substantial actions, a 24-hour strike will follow on January 20th, and if no solutions are found, an indefinite strike will begin on January 28th. Their main demands are the immediate disconnection of the signal of the apps at Larnaca Airport (except for the province of Larnaca) and the strict adherence to the taxi base by all apps. The taxi drivers are calling for the enforcement of the law and the restoration of legality, emphasizing that the responsibility for the consequences will lie with the authorities who knew the situation and did not act. The Licensing Authority expressed surprise and concern about the mobilizations, stating that it is making efforts to mediate and promote changes to the regulatory framework.
