Taxi Drivers in Larnaca to Stage Work Stoppage Today

Taxi drivers in Larnaca will stage a four-hour work stoppage today, Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in protest over issues of professional survival. The work stoppage will take place from 7:00 am to 11:00 am. The Pan-Cypriot Federation of Urban Taxi Drivers (POAT) warns that if there are no immediate and substantial actions from the competent authorities, a 24-hour strike will follow on January 20, and if no solutions are given, an indefinite strike will begin on January 28. The taxi drivers are protesting the uncontrolled operation of passenger transport applications, especially at Larnaca Airport, and the lack of implementation of promises by the Licensing Authority and the Department of Road Transport. Their main demands are the immediate and complete disconnection of the signal and activity of all applications from Larnaca Airport (except for applications licensed in the province of Larnaca) and the strict observance of the taxi base by all applications, without exceptions. POAT emphasizes the need to enforce the law and restore legality, warning that the responsibility for the consequences will lie with those who knew the situation and chose not to act. The Licensing Authority expressed surprise and concern about the mobilizations, stating that it is making efforts to mediate and promote changes to the regulatory framework. The Licensing Authority calls on POAT to reconsider and cancel the measures it has announced, as it believes they may have negative effects on the economy, tourism, and the international image of Cyprus.
