Technical Issue at Athens FIR - Some Landings and Takeoffs Resume

A serious technical issue with the radio communications of the Area Control Centers has caused significant disruption to passengers at Greek airports since Sunday morning. The Civil Aviation Authority announced that only part of the overflights are being served and restrictions have been imposed on flights to and from Greek airports in order to ensure flight safety. The problem affects the frequencies used for radio communications and is being investigated in collaboration with relevant external agencies. Passengers report long delays, overcrowding and uncertainty about the realization of their flights. Aircraft have been grounded on the runway and departures and arrivals have been postponed. However, the situation appears to be gradually improving, with partial restoration of communications and the start of some landings and takeoffs. OTE announced that the initial check did not reveal a technical problem in its circuits and is working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority to identify the source of the problem. The problem also affects flights to and from Cyprus, with at least three flights affected at Larnaca Airport and one flight to Athens at Paphos Airport at risk. Airlines are trying to change flight plans to avoid Greek airspace.
