The Fire Service is issuing a warning about the fire safety of nightclubs in Cyprus, following the tragedy in Crans Montana, Switzerland, where 40 people lost their lives. Spokesman Andreas Kettis stressed the need to use non-flammable materials in construction and to have adequate escape routes. He pointed out that licensing is the responsibility of local authorities, but the Fire Service checks fire safety conditions and provides opinions. He proposes a legislative requirement for the certification of fire safety systems by experts. Mr. Kettis warned that the lack of fire safety measures can be fatal, as fire does not spare and inhaling smoke is extremely dangerous. The tragedy in Crans Montana is attributed to all patrons trying to escape from a single exit.
