The Mistreatment of Animal Carcasses

MP Haralambos Theopemptou of the Citizens' Movement, refers to the mistreatment of animal carcasses, an issue highlighted by the recent case of the turtle in Chloraka. He points out that there is a gap in the legislation, as the handling of turtle carcasses does not comply with European legislation on the management of animal by-products. Furthermore, he states that the practice of painting turtle shells to prevent illegal trade is not being implemented, thus facilitating illegal activity. He emphasizes that the EU does not have a uniform criminal offense for the offensive mistreatment of animal carcasses, but Cyprus has tightened penalties for animal abuse. However, the mistreatment of a dead animal is not explicitly defined as an offense in Cyprus, which Mr. Theopemptou believes needs to be corrected urgently. He proposes the creation of a new offense, such as “mistreatment of an animal carcass”, with a clear definition of intentional humiliating, violent, or offensive treatment or public exposure of a carcass.
