Thousands in Caracas Demand Release of Nicolás Maduro

Thousands of supporters of ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro demonstrated in Caracas, demanding his and his wife's release. Maduro was arrested during a US military operation on January 3rd. The demonstration coincided with the anniversary of the fall of the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez, despite seeking closer ties with Washington, is demanding the return of Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Protesters accused the US of illegal arrest and expressed opposition to Donald Trump's attempts to control Venezuela's oil reserves. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello stated that the return of Maduro and his wife is the greatest triumph for the government. The demonstration highlights the support that Maduro continues to enjoy from a significant portion of the population, despite the political crisis facing the country. The case of Maduro's arrest remains a controversial issue in international relations, with the US maintaining that the arrest is necessary to restore democracy in Venezuela.
