TRNC Criticizes EU Over Cypriot Presidency, Accuses of 'Systematic Disregard'

The so-called “foreign ministry” of the TRNC strongly criticized the European Union over the Republic of Cyprus's assumption of the EU Presidency. The criticism focuses on the accusation that the EU demonstrates “systematic disregard” towards Turkish Cypriots, reflexively protecting the political interests of the Greek Cypriot side. The TRNC argues that the Republic of Cyprus is essentially a Greek Cypriot state and that its accession to the EU in 2004 contributed to the complexity of the Cyprus issue. Furthermore, it calls on the EU to recognize the “inherent sovereign equality” and “equal international status” of Turkish Cypriots in order to achieve lasting peace and stability on the island.
