Trump-Netanyahu Meeting: Agreement on Many Issues, Hamas Must Disarm

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, as “very productive.” The two leaders agreed on many issues, with Netanyahu announcing that Trump would be awarded the Israeli Peace Prize for his contribution to the Middle East. Trump, for his part, threatened Hamas that it must disarm or “pay a very heavy price.” He also expressed concern about Iran's missile program, stating that the US would be forced to “eliminate it very quickly” if Iran continues to strengthen it. Trump asserted that he is aware of Iran’s covert activities and does not wish to send US bombers to the Middle East again, as he did in June. He also stated that he and Netanyahu have differing views on the West Bank, but will reach an agreement. Overall, the meeting seemed to reaffirm the close relationship between Israel and the US, with a focus on confronting Hamas and Iran. The promise of the Peace Prize to Trump is a strong indication of Israel’s appreciation for US support.
