Trump Reiterates Desire to 'Own' Greenland to Counter Russia and China

Former US President Donald Trump has reiterated his desire for the United States to acquire ownership of Greenland, arguing that this is necessary to counter the growing influence of Russia and China in the Arctic. Trump believes that ownership is more important than long-term leases or military agreements, as only ownership can guarantee the true defense of American interests. He claimed, without providing evidence, that Greenland has an increased presence of Russian and Chinese ships and that their presence poses a threat to US security. Denmark, which holds sovereignty over Greenland, and the local Greenlandic authorities have firmly rejected the idea of a sale, emphasizing that the island's future will be decided by the Greenlandic people and Denmark themselves. Copenhagen warned that the use of military force could lead to the dissolution of the transatlantic defense alliance. Greenland's location in the Arctic gives it strategic importance, as it is critical for early warning systems in the event of missile attacks and for monitoring navigation. The United States already maintains a significant military base on the island, Pituffik, which has been under American control since World War II. In addition to strategic concerns, US interest is also boosted by Greenland's rich natural resources, such as rare earths, uranium, and iron. The melting of Arctic ice makes access to these resources easier, but also creates new geopolitical tensions in the region.
