Trump Sought Deal with Maduro – When and How He Decided to Arrest Him

Six months before giving the order for the dramatic operation to arrest Nicolás Maduro, the US President Donald Trump reportedly did not consider a military or repressive solution for Venezuela, but sought a political agreement. According to sources, Trump wanted to secure preferential access for US oil companies to Venezuela's reserves and reach an agreement in his own way. However, this approach was met with strong opposition from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who warned that such an agreement would economically strengthen the Maduro regime. After failed negotiations, Trump gave the green light for a military operation in December. The operation to arrest Maduro is part of a more aggressive foreign policy that Trump appears willing to implement in other countries. Venezuela has become a central point of the Trump administration's priorities, including deportations, drug trafficking and access to natural resources. Richard Grenell, a trusted Trump aide, took over the management of the case, with the aim of releasing US detainees, restarting deportations and securing access for US oil companies. Initially, the strategy seemed to be paying off, with the release of US detainees and the resumption of deportations.
