Trump Threatens Venezuelan Interim President: 'She Will Pay a Higher Price'

Published January 4, 2026, 20:14

Donald Trump stated that Venezuelan interim President Delsy Rodriguez “will pay a higher price than Maduro” if “she doesn’t do the right thing,” emphasizing the disastrous state of the country. He stressed that the reconstruction of Venezuela is desirable and that the current situation cannot be worse. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States would cooperate with Venezuelan officials if they made “the right decisions,” but also assured that Washington maintains its means of pressure, such as the oil embargo. Trump had previously stated that Rodriguez was ready to cooperate, while she responded that the Caracas government was ready to “defend” Venezuela. Additionally, Trump reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland, linking the operation in Venezuela to the possibility of acquiring the island. However, Rubio toned down the rhetoric, emphasizing that the oil embargo is the main means of pressure available to the United States, not direct military intervention.
