Tunisia: Jihadist and Police Officer Die in Counter-Terrorism Operation

In Tunisia, a counter-terrorism operation resulted in the death of a jihadist and a police officer. The Ministry of Interior announced that the operation was preventative and thwarted a terrorist act in the Feriana area. During the operation, Sadik Abidi, a dangerous terrorist allegedly linked to the Islamic State and accused of attacks against the army, police, and residents, was killed. A police officer, Marwan Kantri, was seriously injured and later succumbed to his injuries. Tunisia has experienced increased jihadist activity since the 2011 "revolution," but authorities assure that they have made progress in the fight against them. Security operations continue in the Kasserine region, which remains a haven for jihadists.
