Turkey Turns to Syria for Natural Gas and Maritime Zones – Attempts to Counter Greece-Cyprus-Israel Axis

Turkey aims to finalize an agreement with Syria for offshore energy exploration by 2026, a move that could reshape the balances in the Eastern Mediterranean. The agreement, according to the Turkish Energy Minister, will include seismic surveys and potential drilling. This move is seen as a response to the Greece-Cyprus-Israel axis, which was strengthened by the signing of maritime zone delimitation agreements between Lebanon and Cyprus. Increased Turkish influence in Syria after December 2024 makes such an agreement more likely, while raising concerns in Greece and Cyprus about potential Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) delimitation.
