A delegation from the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, led by AK Party MP Burhan Kayatürk, held a series of meetings in occupied Cyprus. The delegation met separately with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman and “Prime Minister” Ünal Üstel, discussing relations with Turkey and issues related to the European Union. During the meetings, Mr. Erhurman was briefed on the committee's work and expressed his satisfaction with the visit. Mr. Kayatürk presented the discussions taking place in Ankara regarding the European path of the Turkish Cypriots. Mr. Üstel reiterated the position that any solution to the Cyprus issue must be based on two separate and “sovereign states,” invoking the support of Ankara for the Turkish Cypriot side. At the same time, he criticized the European Union for “injustices” against Turkish Cypriots after the 2004 referendum on the Annan plan. These contacts underscore the close relationship between Turkey and Turkish Cypriots, as well as the continued Turkish support for the Turkish Cypriot side in achieving a two-state solution to the Cyprus issue.
