Two protesters were killed today in Latakia, Syria, when security forces broke up an Alawite demonstration demanding self-determination. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least eight anti-government protesters were injured during the violent clashes. Similar demonstrations took place in other Syrian provinces, including Tartus, Homs, and Hama. The Ministry of Interior stated that it has brought the situation under control and accused supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad of attacking security forces. Syria has experienced numerous incidents of religious violence since Assad's removal from power, despite the new government's commitments to protect minorities. The Alawites are a religious minority in Syria, and Assad belongs to this group. The violence has escalated and largely split along religious lines, with many of the dead being members of the Alawite minority. The situation remains unstable, and protecting minorities is a significant challenge for the new government.
