Turkey: Attempted Femicide Inside Courthouse – Judge Shot by Ex-Husband

A Turkish judge was injured after being shot by her ex-husband inside a courthouse in Istanbul, but her life was saved by the intervention of an inmate working inside the courtroom, who prevented the assailant from firing again. The incident occurred in a courthouse in Istanbul, and the perpetrator was the victim's ex-husband. According to the DHA news agency, the suspect shot the victim in the groin before being disarmed by an inmate serving tea to court staff. The inmate was working there as part of his sentence reduction. The victim, who was in the judge's seat at the time of the attack, was taken to hospital after receiving first aid inside the courthouse. The women's rights organization “We Will Stop Femicides” condemned the incident, stating that women can be victims of attacks even inside courthouses, the very place where perpetrators of such acts should be punished. According to the organization, 294 women were killed by men in Turkey in 2023, and another 297 died under suspicious circumstances.
