UN Secretary-General's Report: Encouraging but Early Momentum in Cyprus

The latest report by the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus issue states that there is a "new moment of opportunity" to reach a solution, as informal meetings and contacts between leaders have shown positive signs. Antonio Guterres welcomes the commitment of both leaders and the guarantor powers, despite the fact that we are experiencing the longest period without active negotiations. The report refers to the joint meeting of the leaders on December 11th, where key political issues were discussed for the first time in five years, and their agreement to reach a solution with political equality, as defined in Security Council resolutions. The UN Secretary-General calls on both sides to demonstrate "stronger determination" in implementing confidence-building initiatives, such as opening new crossing points. He also expresses satisfaction with the enhanced role of the Technical Committees, which contribute to promoting cooperation and solving practical problems. Finally, Mr. Guterres expresses concern about unilateral actions within and around the buffer zone and reiterates his unchanged position on Varosha.
