UN Security Council to Meet on Iran

The UN Security Council will convene on Thursday, January 16th, at the request of the United States, to discuss the situation in Iran. The meeting will focus on the agenda item “The Situation in the Middle East.” The announcement was made by Somalia, which holds the presidency of the Security Council for January. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that he was informed that “the killings” of protesters in Iran are “stopping,” amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. According to Trump, the latest information he received indicates that there is no plan by Iranian authorities for executions. However, the NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR) reported that at least 3,428 protesters have been killed in Iran since the beginning of the protests, with more than 10,000 people arrested. The situation in Iran remains unstable despite assurances of de-escalation.
