University of Cyprus Mourns the Loss of George Vassiliou: "Political Founder" of the Institution

The University of Cyprus expresses its deep sorrow for the passing of former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, at the age of 94. The institution describes him as the "political founder" of the university, recognizing his crucial contribution to the establishment and development of Cyprus's first public university. Vassiliou, with foresight and courage, supported the establishment of the University of Cyprus through legislation in 1989, at a time when the creation of such an institution was controversial. The founding of the university allowed access to higher education for many Cypriots who could not afford to study abroad, as well as the repatriation of researchers and scientists. The Rector of the University of Cyprus, Tasos Christofides, emphasized that the university is one of the most important investments in Cyprus, and expressed the institution's eternal gratitude for Vassiliou's trust and support. Vassiliou's personality and prestige also contributed to attracting leading academics, such as Christoforos Pissarides.
